Congratulations to Colin Brown, Dr. Kevin Brown’s son, who graduated from the University of Western Ontario, Bachelor of Management and  Organizational Studies, with a specialization in Commercial Aviation,  attaining the following pilot ratings: Private Pilot, Commercial Pilot, Night Rating, Multi Engine , Multi IFR .  He is currently flying for Skydive Toronto and will be studying law in the fall with aspirations of combining his interest in both aviation and law.

Unionville Festival Parade

Once again, the team and their families at My Dental Home participated in the Unionville festival parade.  We had a great time and enjoyed handing out lip balm, stickers and golf tees (stating “Not a toothpick!”) to the spectators.  We saw many familiar faces and made some new friends in the Unionville area.  Mark your calendar for next year’s parade; the first Saturday in June.  We will see you there!

Annual Mouthguard Clinic

It’s that time of year again!! That’s right, it’s our annual mouthguard clinic running this year from July 5 until August 20.  Dr. Brown, being a huge sports fan himself, knows first hand the importance of wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard. We make them for children and adults of all ages to prevent the risk of injury to the mouth.  Whether your sport is hockey, football or  baseball, everyone who participates in a contact sport should be wearing a mouthguard.   We offer these mouthguards at the very low price of just $30.00 during the months of July & August.  MY DENTAL HOME is looking forward to seeing all of you in the coming weeks.  Please call or email our office today to book your appointment.

Karate Kids

Our “Karate Princesses” Tia, (Dental Assistant Christina’s daughter) and Sriya, (Dr. Chetna Tawar’s daughter)  have been going to karate  for about 6 months now–and they love it!! As it was Mother’s Day in the month of May, the school offered all the moms a gift of a month of karate classes   So Christina & Dr. Tawar warmed up their karate chops and TRIED to keep up in a class along side their lovely, gentle daughters, —and let’s just say that they now have a greater respect for their daughters and will never scream or criticize from those sidelines again!! The best part is that for the month of June– it will be their Daddies’ turn.

Cancer Awareness Month

April is Cancer Awareness month. The news media and Cancer Societies across Canada take this opportunity to make the public more aware about cancer, the advantages of early detection and how prevention can help reduce the risks of different types of cancers.

Very often, these efforts to increase public awareness about different types of cancer ignore cancers of the mouth. Experience shows that most people do not think of the mouth in terms as being a part of their bodies that requires the same kinds of cancer screening as other parts.  While most of us see our physicians for annual check-ups, how often do you see your dentist for an oral cancer screening?

Oral cancer starts in the cells of the mouth (oral cavity). The oral cavity is made up of many parts:

• lips
• tongue
• inside of the lips and cheeks
• hard palate (roof of the mouth)
• floor of the mouth (under the tongue)
• gums and teeth.

The lining of the mouth protects the tissues and organs that make up the oral cavity. And it is exposed to everything you eat, drink and breathe.

The risk of mouth cancer is very real. Also, there are also many other conditions such a heart disease and diabetes can affect the overall health of your mouth.
The next time you exchange smiles with a loved one, a friend or have a smile returned to you as a spontaneous gesture, consider the health of that of smile, and yours. Please take time to enjoy it but also take time to have it checked.

Spring has Sprung

Spring Cleaning

Spring is our transition season between winter and summer.  It is seen as a time of growth, renewal and of new life (plants and animals).   What are you doing now that the warmer weather is upon us?   At “my dental home” we are awaiting the flowers to start to bloom in our flower boxes.

Spring also sparks that “spring cleaning” list.  Don’t forget about a professional cleaning for your teeth.  Our team of dental hygienists are happy to help you.  Spring also means that our Smiles for Life whitening program begins.  This program is a charity event that not only benefits kids with cancer but also supports Markham Stouffville Hospital.    Ask us how you can brighten a child’s life and whiten your smile at the same time!  Happy Spring!

Leafs Game

Dr. Brown, Dr. Elliott and her son Ethan enjoy the Leafs Game

On Thursday, March 11, Dr. Brown, Dr. Elliott and families enjoyed an NHL hockey game together at the ACC between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning.  They were fortunate enough to have a friend that arranged for them to watch the Leafs as they entered the ice from their dressing room!  The game was a close one and kept everyone on the edge of their seats as Tampa Bay scored quickly as soon as the Leafs seemed to take the lead. The game went into a fast-paced overtime period with the Leafs winning 4-3. Not only were we able to attend and support our local Leafs, we were also able to hang out with many other Markham/Unionville friends to support local
talent, Steven Stamkos as he scored the first goal for Tampa Bay and made second star of the game!

Co-op Student Expresses Gratitude

My dental home has welcomed high school co-op students for many years.  We received a wonderful token of appreciation from Chanel, at the end of her co-op term, who surprised us with a home baked, hand decorated “tooth” cake!!! 

Please help us welcome our co-op students at your next dental visit.  At My Dental Home, they learn a variety of skills including sterilizing techniques, office administration and superb patient care!!

New Year’s Resolutions Revisited…in March!!

Lisa and Margit

 Margit Graup, a dental hygienist at “My Dental Home” made a New Year’s resolution with her friend Lisa that would start off their running year with a BANG. They wanted to make a statement about their level of commitment to each other as running partners coupled with a healthy lifestyle and true athletic discipline.  On January 1, they ran a New Year’s 5K Resolution Run as a good start. Margit told Lisa that they would be running a 10K by May 2010 (Sporting Life 10K). Lisa’s laugh speaks a thousand words.   Being true to their commitment, they are training for a 10k and have completed 90K this month alone and next months’ goal is 136k. They are well on their way!!!! A Half-marathon is right around the corner….
